What's Behind 'The Year of' Necklaces?

The Chinese calendar divides the year into twelve months and groups years into twelve-year cycles. Each year in the cycle is represented by an animal symbol: snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog , boar, rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, and dragon. The animal symbols have been used for guidance and fortune-telling. People are thought to have certain personality traits depending on which animal represents the year in which they were born.
